Comparison of K<sub>0.5</sub>Na<sub>0.5</sub>NbO<sub>3</sub> and PbZr<sub>0.52</sub>Ti<sub>0.48</sub>O<sub>3</sub> compliant-mechanism-design energy harvesters

Piezoelectric energy harvesting from ambient vibrations offers an environmentally friendly approach to powering distributed sensors for the Internet of Things. This paper gives a direct comparison Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT)- and (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based harvesters using compliant mechanism harvester design resonant frequencies 20, 40, 70 Hz. At Hz, measured power densities PZT- KNN-based devices are 1139 31 ?W/mm3, respectively, unimorph structures on nickel foils 25 50 ?m in thickness. The density ratios scale proportionally material figures merit. Energy with is twice as efficient when compared simple cantilever beam.
